Owen Thomas is moving from the North American Hockey League to the BC Hockey League, joining Powell River Kings for the upcoming season.

For the second time in as many days, Powell River Kings have announced the signing of a defenceman.

Owen Thomas, who is from Chicago, Illinois, spent last season with Corpus Christi (Texas) IceRays of the North American Hockey League. He appeared in 48 games, scoring once and adding two assists.

“I’m very excited to join the Kings and I’m looking forward to the upcoming season,” said Thomas “It’s a great league with great players and I can’t wait to get started.”

Kings’ assistant coach Kyle Bodie played a big role in recruiting the 17-year-old.

“He’s six-feet, five-inches, skates well, is good with the puck, has a good stick, and thinks the game at a high level, all the tools that translate well to how we try to defend in transition,” said Bodie.

Thomas is committed to play NCAA hockey at Providence College in two years time. Kings’ staff members are looking forward to working with and preparing him for the next level.

“Our goal now is to work with him and provide the opportunity and resources to continue to develop,” added Bodie. “We want him to step right in when he goes to college at Providence.”

Powell River won’t be Thomas’ first stop in Canada. Before heading to Texas he played at College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, for two seasons. He had a standout year for the Hounds 2021/2022, scoring 17 goals to go along with 25 assists in 40 games.

Kings announced the signing of 2004-born defender Shawn Ramsey on July 13.
