BIG UNDERTAKING: Qathet Regional Cycling Association is raising funds to support a proposed Mt. Mahony mountain biking trail network by raffling a high-end bicycle. The cycling association is proposing a world-class gravity/enduro destination trail network in the Mahony area to complement existing biking trails.

Qathet Regional Cycling Association (QRCA) is raffling a $5,000 Ibis Ripley AF bicycle in support of the proposed Mt. Mahony mountain biking trail network.

“You have until May 28 to get your tickets for a chance to win a bike from QRCA,” stated QRCA spokesperson Miles Arbour, in a media release. “The QRCA is raffling off the Ibis Ripley AF and all proceeds go directly towards the Mt. Mahony development project. This is quite the undertaking for our community and one that we’re really excited about. Purchasing raffle tickets is an easy way to show your support, and we need it.”

According to a qathet Regional District (qRD) staff report, QRCA is seeking authorization from Recreation Sites and Trails BC for a mountain biking trail network on Mr. Mahony, located between Inland Lake Provincial Park and Haslam Lake in Electoral Area B. The staff report indicated the purpose of the proposed trails is to create a world-class gravity/enduro destination trail network in the area to complement the existing cross-country trail network in the Duck Lake area.

According to the report, QRCA states that there are 17 kilometres of existing gravity/enduro-style trails that have been developed over the last few years, along with 10 kilometres of proposed new gravity-oriented trails and supporting facilities, including a parking area, composting toilet and kiosk with trail signage.

At the April 26 regional district board meeting, directors voted unanimously to advise Recreation Sites and Trails BC that the qRD supports the application for the proposed mountain bike trail network on Mt. Mahony.

Tickets for the bike are one for $20 or three for $50. They are available at TAWS, Suncoast Cycles and Townsite Brewing.

Arbour stated that the bike up for grabs is on display at the brewery. For folks out of town or who can’t make it into one of the shops, they can arrange to get their tickets by sending an email to [email protected]. The winner gets to choose the frame size of the bike.

The $5,000 bike isn’t the only prize. There are also runner-up prizes from TAWS and Suncoast Cycles, including a Big Agnes Bikepack tent and a Kids Ride Shotgun seat.

“A huge shout out to First Credit Union for coming on as the headline sponsor for the raffle,” stated Arbour. “We couldn’t have done this without them. We are also grateful for the support of TAWS, Townsite Brewing, Suncoast Cycles and Ibis.”
