qathet region’s annual bathtub race was held on August 17 at Gibsons Beach, with four bathtubs taking part in a 10-lap race of the course.
Organizer and local bathtub racer Melvin Mitchell said wave conditions were about two to three feet, so spectators could see the tubbers catching some air, coming off the waves.
This year’s entries into the race were down from previous years because many of the bathtubs that could have potentially participated here were banged up in the Great International Bathtub Race held in Nanaimo two weeks prior. As a result, no winner of the local race was declared.
Mitchell said the event attracted elite racers who had previously won the Nanaimo race, so spectators were able to see the best in action.
