Powell River Villa picked up one of a possible three points in Vancouver Island Soccer League action at Vanier Turf in Comox on Saturday, January 25, by drawing Comox Valley United 1-1. Jamie Perez scored for Powell River.
"We put in a good team effort and were well organized defensively," said Villa manager Chris McDonough. "We also created some decent chances with our counterattacking."
With the single point, Villa moved to within six points Sooke Celtic and Nanaimo United, both of which lost games the day before. Nanaimo and Sooke have each played two more games than Powell River and are currently tied for eighth place in VISL Division 1 standings.
"Powell River is in tough and will need a couple favourable results in order to get out of the cellar and avoid relegation to Division 2," stated VISL executive director Vince Greco, in his weekly update.
Regular season games are on hold this weekend as VISL Division 1 and 2 teams open Jackson Cup play. Villa will face Vic West’s VISL Division 2 squad on February 1 in Victoria. Game time at Findlayson Park is 8 pm.
The Jackson Cup is VISL’s version of the FA Cup in England and has been contested since 1915. Villa hoisted the trophy in 1991, 1995, 1997 and 2000.
