Powell River swimmers attend largest meet of season

A large contingent of Powell River athletes travelled to Vancouver Island earlier this week to participate in the Comox Valley Blue Devils Invitational swim meet. The event took place June 23 and 24 in Courtenay with athletes in all divisions bringing home plenty of ribbons.

“We had about 40 athletes competing, and it was the first swim meet for probably half of them,” said coach Mary Maguire. “The sportsmanship really stood out to me this weekend, tons of high fives and encouragement.” 

Division one results

Tilly Cocksedge-Hamilton placed fourth in the 100 IM, 50-metre backstroke and 50-metre breaststroke, sixth in the 100-metre freestyle and seventh in the 50-metre freestyle. Willa Venselaar placed seventh in the 50-metre backstroke and 11th in the 50-metre freestyle. Aiden Muzylowski placed ninth in the 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre freestyle, and 13th in the 50-metre freestyle.

Mac Gerhart placed eighth in the 50-metre backstroke and 14th in the 50-metre freestyle. Kai Mikkelsen placed seventh in the 50-metre backstroke and 16th in the 50-metre freestyle.

Londyn Waterton was fifth in 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre freestyle, and eighth in the 50-metre fly and 50-metre breaststroke. Bria Massullo was sixth in 50-metre backstroke and Emily Massullo placed 14th in 50-metre backstroke. Clair Karger placed 10th in the 100-metre freestyle. 

Division two

Adianta Cocksedge-Hamilton placed third in 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke, fourth in the 100 IM, and sixth in 50-metre fly and 50-metre breaststroke.

Saphire Mitchell placed fourth in 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre fly, and fifth in 50-metre backstroke, 50-metre breaststroke and 100 IM.

Malia Mikkelsen placed third in 50-metre breaststroke, fifth in the 100-metre freestyle, seventh in 50-metre freestyle, eighth in the 100-metre IM and 50-metre backstroke, and ninth in 50-metre fly.

Brier Gordon placed ninth in 100-metre freestyle, 11th in 50-metre freestyle and 12th in the 100-metre IM and 50-metre backstroke. Quynn Lefler was 11th in 50-metre breaststroke, 12th in 50-metre fly, 13th in 50-metre freestyle and 100-metre freestyle, and 14th in 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre IM. Russell O'Donnell placed fourth in 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke, and fifth in 50-metre fly, 50-metre breaststroke and 100-metre freestyle.

Gabe Mussellam placed ninth in the 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke, and 10th in 50-metre fly and 100-metre freestyle.

Alivia Massullo was 12th in the 50-metre breaststroke and 

Issac Mack was sixth in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Division three

Madison Giesbrecht placed fourth in the 100-metre IM, 50-metre breaststroke and 50-metre fly, and fifth in the 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke.

Division four

Ayva Gunther placed first in 200-metre IM, 100-metre backstroke and 50-metre freestyle, and second in 50-metre fly, 100-metre breaststroke and 100-metre freestyle.

Hannah Giesbrecht was sixth in the 100-metre breaststroke, eighth in 200-metre IM, ninth in 50-metre fly and 100-metre backstroke, 11th in the 100-metre freestyle and 12th in 50-metre freestyle.

Division five

Isabella Colasanto placed 14th in the 100-metre IM and 18th in 50-metre freestyle. Shea O'Donnell was 12th in the 100-metre backstroke, 13th in 50-metre freestyle and 100-metre breaststroke, and 14th in 50-metre fly.

Reeve Morwood placed sixth in 50-metre freestyle and Macklin Boyd placed seventh in 50-metre fly and 100-metre free, and ninth in 50-metre freestyle. Hannah Giesbrecht was ninth in the 100-metre fly. Anthony Mulder placed fourth in 50-metre fly and 100-metre breaststroke, and fifth in the 100-metre freestyle. Elijah Hueston placed eighth in 50-metre fly.

Division six

Amy Mulder was ninth in the 100-metre breaststroke and 10th in the 100-metre freestyle. Noah Mack placed fifth in the mixed relay.

Division eight

Team’s coaches Alex Jevons and Maguire competed in division eight. Jevons came first in the 100-metre backstroke and second in 50-metre freestyle. Maguire placed fifth in 50-metre freestyle.

This upcoming weekend we will be competing in Nanaimo,” said Maguire. “It is an interesting meet because it is three days long, and there are heats and finals.”
