Cohen Mastrodonato has fond memories of his time in the Powell River Minor Hockey Association (PRMHA) system. That’s no surprise, considering he was part of playoff championship teams at the U11, U13, U15 and U18 levels.
Mastrodonato says his parents and brother were the biggest influences on his development as a player. He lists Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon as his favourite National Hockey League player.
Mastrodonato’s career highlight was competing in the U15 provincials in 2017, when the tournament was held at Powell River Recreation Complex.
For parts of the past three to five seasons, he has suited up as a centre for his hometown Powell River Regals as the club builds a roster to compete for a provincial Coy Cup title.
Away from the rink Mastrodonato works as a stores attendant at qathet General Hospital. He also volunteers as a coach for PRMHA hockey skill sessions.
Regals will host Coy Cup 2024, competed for by senior AA teams in BC, with three regional winners joining the home team at the tournament in March. Tickets for the tournament will be on sale as of Monday, February 5, at the Peak, TAWS and Royal LePage Powell River.
In continuing to prepare for the Coy Cup, Regals travelled to Innisfail, Alberta, to face that province’s defending senior AAA champions on January 26 and 27. Earlier this month, the team played a pair of road games against a semi-professional club in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
