GREAT SUCCESS: Powell River Queens under-15 hockey team display their gold medals after winning a tournament on the lower Sunshine Coast with a 7-1 over the Vancouver Angels hockey club in the final.

Powell River under-15 Queens hockey team travelled to Sechelt for the Sunshine Coast Winter Classic female hockey tournament, bringing home gold medals.

According to coach Julie Venselaar, the team was incredibly successful, with a 4-1-0 tournament record, winning the gold medal game 7-1 against Vancouver Angels.

“As the defending champions of this tournament, it was very exciting to win it for the second year in a row,” stated Venselaar in a written account of the tournament. “First-year goalie Brooke Bodnar recorded her first two shutout games ever and only let four goals past her all weekend.”

Venselaar stated that the team saw scoring from seven of 12 players.

Three players competed in the tournament's skills competition on the Saturday of the tournament. Forward Quynn Lefler won first place at the skills competition for most accurate shot, forward Nelle Liefsoens came second in the fastest skater race, and defender Luce Liefsoens finished second in the hardest shot competition.

“I am a very proud coach,” stated Venselaar. “The team worked really hard and played great hockey.”
