CLOSE CALL: A backhand attempt by Powell River U18 Kings forward Ben Belyea sailed just over the crossbar in the second period of a U18 minor hockey game against Campbell River Tyees at Strathcona Gardens on Sunday, November 6.

Powell River U18 Kings travelled to Campbell River on Sunday, November 6, to complete a two-game weekend road trip.

Evan Piniewski, from Jeremy Pukesh, opened the scoring midway through the first period, and Braedyn Louie set up Dreydan Harris, whose hard shot from the slot eluded the Tyees’ goaltender in the second period, giving the Kings a 2-0 lead.

Campbell River cut the lead in half before the end of the second, setting up a tense final frame at Strathcona Gardens.

Harris and Ben Belyea combined to set up Louie, who snapped the puck into the net after several short passes by his teammates for the eventual game winner. Campbell River closed the gap to one goal again with 10 minutes remaining, but Powell River players endured several frantic moments and scrambles in front of goaltender Leo Brousseau to hold on for a 3-2 win.

“Great effort from the entire team this weekend,” said coach Neil Pukesh after Sunday’s game. “It was great to get three out of four possible points, and to see how we were able to clean up some small mistakes from Saturday and turn those into positives today.”

The previous day, the Kings skated to a 3-3 tie at Howie Meeker Arena in Parksville.

Kings are taking part in the Cloverdale U18 Memorial Tournament from November 11 to 13. The team’s next home game is against Nanaimo at 1:15 pm on Saturday, November 19.
