HAVE A GO DAY: Suncoast Paddling Club is inviting the public to try the sport of outrigger canoeing for a day, at its clubhouse near the Shinglemill Pub on Powell Lake, this Sunday, April 27.

Folks in qathet who have dined on the Shinglemill Pub outdoor patio have most likely observed people in thin canoe-like boats paddling up and down the lake waterways.

Since 2001, Suncoast Paddling Club members have trained on Powell Lake in outrigger canoes, either for fun or competition. On Sunday, April 27, club members are inviting the public to their clubhouse beside the pub, to give the sport of outrigger canoeing a try.

"We are offering free introductory paddles in our outrigger canoes on beautiful Powell Lake, in a safe environment for all ages," said Suncoast Paddling Club president Bruce Layzell. "This is an opportunity to try outrigger canoeing, with no cost or obligation."

Folks six-years-old and up can participate for free from 1 to 3 pm; no experience is necessary.

"Bring your family as well as friends who are interested in trying paddling and we’ll get you out on the water for fun," shared club members in a social media post. "We recommend you wear some comfortable clothing that you would wear for outdoor activity and that you wouldn’t mind getting a few splashes on. We provide all other necessary equipment, like paddles and PFDs [life jackets] for your outing."

Paddling club members stated that folks can expect to be on the water for about 20 minutes while club coaches run through the basics of outrigger canoeing.

"During and after your paddle, you will be able to meet our program coaches," the post stated. "For people brand new to paddling, this is a great opportunity to try it out before registering for the summer season or committing to a full season."

The event will happen rain or shine and no registration is required.
