Tim Hortons Pee Wee Rep Kings were in action on the road December 10 and 11 and showed they have no trouble finding the net.
Saturday afternoon the Kings visited Peninsula Eagles in Victoria. After back and forth play for the first 10 minutes the Kings went on the board with a goal by Bryson Cecconi from Jack Long followed by an unassisted goal from Juanre Naude. Peninsula responded early in the second period to make it 2-1, but that was as close as this game got.
Kings reeled off five unanswered tallies to go up 7-1 at the end of the second. Goals came from Keaton Mastrodonato, two more from Cecconi, followed by Mastrodonato and then a bullet from the point off the stick of Long. Kings added two more in the third period with Naude getting his second, followed by Mastrodonato’s hat trick. Peninsula added their second goal for a 9-2 final.
Sunday morning saw Pee Wee Kings head to Kerry Park to play the Islanders. Kerry Park had knocked off league-leading Port Alberni the night before and were looking to follow it up with another home win and solidify second place in the standings.
Powell River got a good night’s rest and were all business from the drop of the puck. All three lines had jump early and it was only four minutes in when Tyler Carpendale banged the first goal from Cecconi. The teams traded good chances at both ends, and with six minutes left in the period, Ethan Schmunk tapped in a nice feed from Curtis Kondra to lead 2-0 after the first.
The second period was again a battle, both teams getting their share of chances. Kings goalie Isaiah Brach made a number of big saves to hold the lead, and then received more goal support with three goals in three minutes. Cecconi notched one from Carpendale, followed by Brett Kinley from Cameron McNeil and Naude, and then Cecconi again for his second hat trick in two consecutive games.
The 5-0 lead put Kerry park on their heels, causing some chippy play and penalties to follow. Kings capitalized on the powerplay, with Spencer Jamieson blasting one to the low corner from Long, followed by Mastrodonato taking the centre ice faceoff win by Cecconi to the net and deking the goalie.
Kerry Park scored their first goal late in the period to make it 7-1 after two.
Third period action saw the Kings continue their strong game and on the powerplay Naude added another from Kinley and McNeil. Kerry Park answered with two late goals as they didn’t give up. Mastrodonato closed out the scoring and the Kings rolled to a 9-3 win.
After two hardworking road victories the Kings are solidly in second place in their division. They will host division one Comox at 1:30 pm on Saturday December 17 then Nanaimo at 1:15 pm on Sunday, December 18 for a pair of exhibition games at Powell River Recreation Complex.
