Powell River CEP Local 76 Midget Kings headed into the weekend anxious to get started on their best-of-three playoff series against Alberni Valley Midget Bulldogs. The winner of this series would be named Vancouver Island Tier II Midget Champions.
Game one of the series was played at Weyerhaeuser Arena in Port Alberni on Saturday afternoon. The Kings got off to a slow start as Port Alberni struck first scoring just 27 seconds into the game. Undaunted by this early setback Powell River scored twice in the first period going into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead. As the game progressed the Kings were able to shift the momentum and take control going into the third period with a 6-2 lead. Port Alberni fought desperately to come back but only managed to score once more. Powell River added an empty net goal to make it a 7-3 final count.
On Sunday afternoon the series moved to Hap Parker Arena with the Kings looking to finish things off and Port Alberni in a must-win situation. Game two was a tightly fought battle which didn’t see its first goal until midway through the second period when Powell River opened the scoring. Kings held a 1-0 lead after two periods. The third period saw the teams exchange goals early but the Kings were able to add two more and skate away with the 4-1 win and the championship.
The series win earns Powell River the right to represent Vancouver Island District in the BC Hockey Championships in Saanich on March 18 to 21.
