Thichum Forest Products hosted the Thichum Cup ball hockey tournament in Tla’amin Nation from June 21 to 23.
According to Thichum general manager Adam Culos, it was an amazing weekend with beautiful weather, good hockey and most importantly, lots of smiles on children’s faces.
The theme for this year’s tournament was qatᶿɛnxegəs (coming together), stated Culos in a media release. The most important component was uniting the Adam Louie and Lloyd Hackett Memorial with the tournament, he added.
“The original tournament, started by Codie Louie, Taylor St. Amand, Jacky Harry and Sam Hackett, in 2009, honours the memory of Adam and Lloyd,” stated Culos. “Thichum is excited to be a small part in helping this memorial tournament carry on through the Thichum Cup.”
The event also brought together visiting First Nations from W̱SÁNEĆ and Sts’ailes, and neighbours from qathet, through a fun weekend of ball hockey. It was a successful event, with more than 80 children and 90 adults participating in the event over three days.
The winners of the adult tournament were the Tla’amin Sounders.
Culos stated that special thanks go out up to Kaycee Mitchell for tournament organizing, Tla’amin staff Carmen Galligos, Brianne Louie, Callum Galligos and Davis McKenzie for incorporating the kids’ tournament into Indigenous Day celebrations, and for the extra hands from their crews for the setup and cleanup. He added that Byron Harry and crew provided first aid coverage, and thanks go out to the public safety crew for its presence.
“Our hands are raised to the tremendous support from our business partners for their sponsorship of the event,” stated Culos. “Sponsors include In Situ Archaeology, Pete’s Plumbing, Modern Windows, Rivercity Mini Excavating, Dawn Construction, Winmar, Relay Rentals, Jepson Mobile Booming, Aero, Thunder Bay Tugs, Clark Wilson Legal, Thunder Bay Saw Shop, Tla’amin Lake Contracting, Lund Marine, Gordon Brothers, Marta Trucking, KR Logging, Forbidden Mechanical, Pilldolla Creek and Sitka Mechanical.
“Supporting the community through these types of events is a very important part of the Thichum Forestry business model and we look forward to continuing into the future.”
