FLEXIBLE FORWARD: Kurt Gurkan is the latest addition to the Powell River Kings’ lineup.

Powell River Kings announced the signing of Kurt Gurkan on Wednesday, July 10. The 20-year-old forward will join the BC Hockey League (BCHL) club for the 2024/2025 season.

"Kurt will bring a nice consistent and calming energy to our forward group" stated Kings’ assistant general manager Stephan Seeger Jr. "He is a strong young man with speed who has a lot of junior experience under his belt."

Gurkan is from Darien, Connecticut, and has committed to Yale University for the 2025/2026 season. He spent last year in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with Blackfalds Bulldogs and Drayton Valley Thunder, where he collected 12 goals and 13 assists in 44 games.

Prior to his time in the AJHL, the veteran forward played 19 BCHL games for Vernon Vipers during the 2022/2023 campaign, registering one goal and four assists.

"He will play both a responsible and flexible role in our lineup at centre and wing," stated Seeger Jr. "We are very happy to have been able to add Kurt this offseason."

Gurkan will be reunited with Christian Maro in Powell River. The two played together at Phillips Exeter Academy (New Hampshire) in 2021/2022. Gurkan served as team captain that season and was the leading scorer with 38 points in 28 games.
