Abby Lloyd, Powell River’s top ranked judoka, has won gold in national competition.
For the fifth time in a row she has taken a top spot in Canadian nationals judo, winning a gold medal in the under-21 under-48 kilogram class.
The 2014 Canadian Judo Championships, held in Saguenay, Quebec, May 15 to 18, were organized by Judo Canada, the national governing body for the sport of judo in Canada.
Lloyd, who trains with the Sunshine Coast Judo Club, was one of only a few double medal winners, taking bronze in the senior under-48 kilogram category. Other double winners from British Columbia included Abbotsford’s Brandon Jobb, Burnaby’s Scott McGrandle and Amara Javernin and Kamloops’ Megan and Geoff Hanks.
Athletes from BC had another very successful year at nationals winning nine gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals. This follows the record gold-medal haul for BC’s senior judokas last year at the Canadian Judo Championships held in Richmond.
JudoBC head coach Bruce Kamstra is extremely pleased with how the province’s athletes did in Quebec and said that the team is “on track for excellent results at the upcoming 2015 Canada Winter Games being held in Prince George.”
The Lloyd family was unavailable for comment before press time.
