Powell River’s U13 girls Cobras soccer club advanced to the Vancouver Island Cup finals recently with two overwhelming victories in Comox.
In their first match of the day, the Cobras started out slowly but caught a couple of breaks in the first half and led 2-0 against a very game Comox Valley team. The second half saw a better performance from Powell River as they added two more goals and walked away with a 4-0 victory.
With only a one-hour break and playing a rested, talented Nanaimo squad, the young Cobras knew they would have to put in a strong performance to advance. Starting out slowly the players worked hard against their fresh opponents. The hard work paid off in the first half as the Cobras struck first, taking a one-goal lead into the half-time break. With 35 minutes of soccer between them and a victory they came out playing their best soccer of the day. Two more Cobra shots found the back of the Nanaimo net giving the team a well-deserved 3-0 victory, which qualifies them for the prestigious Vancouver Island Cup championship finals on the weekend of May 7 and 8 in Victoria.
