SECOND STAR: Powell River Kings’ goaltender Matthias Smith knocks the puck away from a Langley Eagles’ player during a BC Hockey League game on Friday, February 18. Smith stopped 37 of 39 shots, and was named the game’s second star, but was outdueled by his counterpart Jameson Kaine, who made 41 saves for Langley to earn the win and claim first star honours.

Holding the BC Hockey League’s Coastal Conference leaders to two goals on Friday, February 18, was a positive for Powell River Kings, who outshot Langley Rivermen 41-39 but ultimately fell short in a 2-1 loss at home.

Goaltenders Jameson Kaine (Langley) and Matthias Smith (Powell River) each made 12 saves in a scoreless first period and continued to stymie opposing players for nearly the entire middle frame. Kaine stopped 10 more shots and Smith turned aside another 12 before Eagles' forward Keeton Oakley opened the scoring 17 seconds prior to the second intermission.

Caleb Parkhouse responded with a tying goal on one of the Kings’ 19 third-period shots to force overtime, but Langley’s Max Dukovac converted the only shot of the extra period, which came at the 1:59 mark, into the game-winning goal.

Kaine was named the game’s first star ahead of Smith (second) and Kings’ defender Casey Aman (third). Nathan Small and Anthony Lucarelli picked up assists on the lone goal for the home team.

Attendance at Hap Parker Arena was 763.

The two teams meet again tonight in Powell River. Game time is 7 pm.
