Braves handle competitors readily

Under-12 team easily defeats competition

Sliammon Junior Braves soccer teams again brought back the top honours from the Totem Soccer Tournament in Victoria.

The Braves’ under-12 team, coached by Dave Moon, finished first after defeating Shell Beach (Ladysmith), Cowichan, Victoria and Seabird Island. Moon said other teams from Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation did not fair as well, but the experience was valuable. Moon said that his players did a good job and “paddled together.”

This is the fourth time he has taken players from Tla’amin to the tournament and he credits the experience of his under-12 players for their win. “We all managed to get out there and have some fun,” he said.

Moon has been selected to coach for the Native Indian Football Association (NIFA) and some of the players on the under-12 team, including his sons James and Jarod Timothy, have been chosen to play for NIFA in the Waipio International Youth Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii this August.

The Junior Braves are slated to play in their next tournament in Duncan over the Mother’s Day weekend.
