Atoms rack up impressive season

Young hockey players display strong work ethic

Powell River Canadian Tire Atom Development Kings were crowned champions Sunday, March 9, with a convincing win over the Comox Valley Chiefs in the final game of the league playoffs.

The playoff victory came after an exceptional regular season and capturing the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association league banner just two weeks ago.

“Our kids made Powell River proud,” said head coach Scott Mastrodonato. “They worked extremely hard all year, and we couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishment.”

The group of nine- and 10-year-olds truly had an “amazing season.” They compiled a record of 15 wins and only two losses in placement, league and playoffs in the VIAHA play, with an overall record to date of 26 wins against nine losses, including exhibition games.

“As a coaching staff, we had a great groups of kids that were eager to learn, work hard and have fun,” Mastrodonato added. “It was a pleasure watching them grow and improve every day. Their solid teamwork and effort resulted in some fabulous results and great memories for all of us.”

The team heads off to Richmond from March 15-18 for a fun year-end tournament to finish off the season.
