Born in Toronto, Bob had a true love of knowledge. He studied philosophy, completing a PhD at the University of Waterloo on Heidegger’s ethics. After teaching across Canada, he moved to Powell River in 1979.
At Malaspina College, now VIU, Bob taught philosophy, coordinated the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, then became director from 1982-1997. Under Bob’s leadership, the college thrived and developed many occupational retraining programs to support the community.
Bob loved Powell River - he sailed with the sailing club, co-founded the Blackberry Festival, volunteered for Kathaumixw and sang in the Powell River Chorus and Powell River Men’s Choir. He championed learning and literacy through the Friends of the Library.
A true adventurer, Bob and wife Alison travelled extensively. They visited India and established a scholarship for girls in 1992; they also lived and taught in Tokyo (1995) and Beijing (2003), and enjoyed regular cycle tours and home exchanges in Europe.
In 2010, Bob proudly published his book, Godless Religion, an examination of the sacred through profound reflection in nature. A member of Haiku Canada, Bob wrote haiku and haiga. Throughout his life and work, Bob always advocated for peace and intercultural understanding.
