On Monday, February 17, many folks in qathet enjoyed a reprieve from cold weather, as the sun shone for most of the day, with no wind. However, that calm before the storm is predicted to end, beginning early Wednesday morning.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a wind warning in effect for: Sunshine Coast, sḵelhp (Saltery Bay) to Powell River.
Strong winds that may cause damage are expected Wednesday morning to late Wednesday afternoon, stated the ECCC.
"A low pressure centre will approach Vancouver Island tonight and Wednesday morning and as the low approaches, strong southeast winds of 70-kilometres an hour, gusting to 90, will develop," warned ECCC. "Winds will ease late Wednesday afternoon as the low moves over Vancouver Island and weakens."
Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.
According to the Weatherhood station located on the roof of the Peak on Marine Avenue, the current temperature for Tuesday, February 18, is five degrees Celsius and will rise to six degrees this afternoon. The weather this week will be a mix of sun, cloud and rain, a change from the region's last two weeks of dry and cold weather.
There is an 87 per cent chance of precipitation beginning at 12 am and continuing into Wednesday, February 19.
