A bus carrying a team of senior girls volleyball players to Powell River for the 2018 AAA High School Girls BC Volleyball Championship has crashed near Cache Creek on Highway 97.

According to a BC Emergency Health Services tweet, paramedics arrived at the location of the accident at about 12 pm on Tuesday, November 27, and cared for and triaged all patients at the scene.

Eight patients were transported to hospital, one patient via air ambulance, in critical, non-life-threatening condition. The remaining seven patients were transported by ground ambulance.

The team is from College Heights Secondary School in Prince George.

Powell River School District 47 superintendent Jay Yule, a former Brooks senior girls volleyball coach, said Powell River's thoughts and prayers are with the team and their families.

"This accident transcends sport and makes championships seem trivial," said Yule. "The volleyball community is close-knit and will come together to support each other through this."
