Tourism receives extra funds

Council will consider resolution of overpayment

Tourism Powell River may be the beneficiary of an extra $5,000 because of an administrative oversight.

At City of Powell River’s finance committee meeting, Thursday, February 26, Shehzad Somji, the city’s chief financial officer, said the overpayment was a staff error that they came across. A $5,000 advance was given to Tourism Powell River in January 2014 and was not deducted from the organization’s first quarter payment later in the year. He said the recommendation was that the city accepts responsibility for this error.

Somji said there were several options available to council, including a request for a return of the overpayment. His recommendation is that council provides a $5,000 grant-in-aid to Tourism Powell River to cover the overpayment of the 2014 annual funding. “There is room in the grant-in-aid budget,” he said.

The committee decided to send the matter to council for a decision.
