Recount of votes results in tie for eighth legislator position, which was settled by a draw

WINNING BALLOT: Tla’amin Nation’s official vote results have been released from the September 14 general election, with Erik Blaney being returned as a legislator after a vote recount.

In a recount of votes from the Tla’amin Nation general election on September 14, Erik Blaney has been returned as a legislator.

According to a media release from Tla’amin, as a result of the recount, Blaney and Leonard Harry were tied with 175 votes each.

The release stated that section 63 of Tla’amin election law states that in the event of a tie after a recount, the electoral officer shall place both names in a receptacle and a draw is held.

Electoral officer Jordan Loose from OneFeather, the organization presiding over the election, filled out one ballot each in the name of Blaney and Harry and placed them in a ballot box. The electoral officer drew Blaney’s name for the eighth and final spot in the Tla’amin legislature, according to the release.

According to the official results of the election, of the votes cast for legislator, Losa Luaifoa had 309, Brandon Peters had 227, Brandon Louie and Timothy Tanner had 220, Dillon Johnson had 217, Gloria Francis had 202, Callum Galligos had 179 and Erik Blaney had 176.

In the election for hegus, incumbent John Hackett had 224 votes, Clint Williams had 146 and Arnie Courtney had 110.
