CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS: Powell River Board of Education chairperson Dale Lawson, in recognition of Education Week, indicated it is an opportunity to reflect on the vital role that everyone plays to ensure children are realizing their full potential.

With this being Education Week in British Columbia, Powell River Board of Education/School District 47 chairperson Dale Lawson has indicated it is a time to highlight the importance of learning.

“We are very proud of the contributions of all our School District 47 staff and the many ways they support student achievement each and every day across the district,” said Lawson. “Education Week provides us with the opportunity to reflect on the vital role that we all play to ensure that our children are realizing their full potential.

“From food security initiatives to mental health and wellness supports, to creating environments where students feel like they belong, to increasing specialized roles to support literacy and numeracy, all of these efforts – and more – are successful because we have a community full of individuals committed to the educational excellence of our children.”

Rachna Singh, provincial minister of education and child care, has commented on Education Week 2023.

“For over three and a half decades, BC has joined together with other provinces to proclaim this week and celebrate and recognize the remarkable achievements and work happening in school districts throughout the province,” stated Singh in a media release.

“Education Week provides an important opportunity to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of teachers, principals and vice-principals, superintendents, education leaders, school district staff, trustees, as well as students and families, to support educational excellence and student achievement. From April 24 to 28, we are proclaiming Education Week in BC.”

Singh stated that the province is committed to supporting school districts to ensure students are provided the tools needed to succeed through their school years and beyond.

“We are working hard to make quality, inclusive education available for all students in British Columbia,” stated Singh.

“In order for students to thrive, parents and caregivers need support so they can succeed, too, and that’s why we’re building and upgrading the schools that kids, families and staff need. This also means prioritizing child care, with nearly 10,000 new spaces funded on school grounds.”

Singh expressed gratitude for all the hard work that happens in BC classrooms every day, from the kindergarten to grade 12 staff.

“BC has a world-class education system and we’re proud to support schools as we work together to help BC students reach their full potential,” stated Singh. “Our government is committed to supporting the next generation of learners and preparing them for today’s fast-paced world. If we all continue to work together, we can build a province for British Columbians to enjoy for many years to come.”
