FREE MEMBERSHIP: Association of Savary Island Committee outlined its function to qathet Regional District directors and received a grant-in-aid for annual operating costs.

Association of Savary Island Committee (ASIC) has received financial support from qathet Regional District (qRD) for annual operating costs.

At the November 27 regional board meeting, association past chair and communications manager Wayne Goodridge explained to regional directors the function of the organization. He said ASIC was incorporated in 2009 and membership in the association is strictly Savary Island property owners.

“We offer free membership to encourage more enrolment and we currently have 939 members,” said Goodridge. “We have actually grown by more than 100 in the last four months because property owners want to be up to speed and know more about the official community plan review and update process.”

Goodridge said the association uses an email distribution list to provide newsletters and updates quickly and efficiently to its membership. The biggest feature of the association is communication, he added.

“First and foremost, it is education and information,” said Goodridge. We provide property owners with valuable insight on events and issues which impact Savary life. We channel feedback to the qRD on property owner priorities.

“We also conduct community surveys and produce reports for the membership. We communicate with the ministry of transportation and infrastructure and the Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department on road conditions. We also communicate with the RCMP on various concerns on Savary Island.”

Goodridge said the association follows and reviews visitor impact on many of the island resources and the impact on the island’s beaches.

He said in terms of the grant-in-aid application, the association was requesting a $2,500 grant to cover annual operating costs.

“We are 100 per cent volunteer-driven,” said Goodridge. “Free membership facilitates open and equal representation for all Savary Island property owners.”

Electoral Area A director Jason Lennox said the association has been channelling feedback and he appreciated the passing of information to qRD because it makes for a helpful point of contact.

qRD’s board provided a $2,500 grant-in-aid for the Association of Savary island Committee.
