An application to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for the volunteer and composite fire departments equipment and training funding stream of the community emergency preparedness fund was approved at the qathet Regional District (qRD) board meeting on October 23.
The application is for the Northside Volunteer Fire Department, Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department, Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department and Lasqueti Island Volunteer Fire Department. If successful, the board would endorse qRD providing overall grant management for the project.
The current version of the grant can provide a maximum $40,000 funding per fire department, so cumulatively, qRD is eligible to apply for $160,000 for firefighting training and equipment support for its four local fire services. To qualify for funding, applicants must demonstrate the extent to which proposed projects will build the resiliency of volunteer and composite fire departments in preparing for and responding to emergencies.
Staff intend to submit an application for $40,000 for necessary firefighting equipment to be budgeted in 2025 for each of the Northside, Savary Island, Malaspina, and Lasqueti Island fire protection services.
