UPDATED PLAN: qathet Regional District has launched the process to update Savary Island's community plan. The first step is a survey open to the qathet community and specifically Electoral Area A.

qathet Regional District (qRD) has launched the Savary Island Community Plan project in order to meet new provincial legislation as well as to implement a long-term plan for how Savary Island will evolve over the next 25 years.

The first step is for the [Electoral Area A and qathet] community to complete a survey by October 31.

"The Savary Island Community Plan will build on previous plans, reports and studies and include a comprehensive community engagement process," a recent qRD media stated:

The hope is to create a long-term plan for how Savary will evolve over the next 25 years.

"The community plan will be developed by working with the community to address the issues, identify and celebrate the opportunities, while maintaining Savary Island’s unique community character," the release stated.

The current community plan, also referred to as an Official Community Plan (OCP), was completed in 2007, and is now close to 20 years old. Since then, the province of BC has issued new legislation that needs to be included in an updated plan.

"The plan sets out a vision, goals and overarching policies guiding land use and development in the area covered by the plan,” the release stated. “The regional board, staff and property owners use the OCP to guide decisions on where to locate new development and where to provide regional and electoral area services.”

For more information about the project and to sign up for project updates, go to qathet.ca/savaryocp. The following survey should take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

This update will build on previous plans and studies, and include many opportunities for the public to share their ideas and insights, according to the release.

qRD hosted open houses on August 26 and 27. A report from these events, which summarizes feedback received and outlines next steps, is now available. To view the report, search for Savary Island Community Plan at qathet.ca.

qRD planner Cherise Roberts stated that there will be several virtual engagements in November, but dates are to be announced.
