For decades now, the Rotary Club of Powell River has provided a casino night as part of Dry Grad for graduating students from Brooks Secondary School.
After the official ceremony in Hap Parker Arena on June 8, the graduates changed out of their formal attire and into casual wear for fun, food, music, magic and games in the rink area at Powell River Recreation Complex.
Rotarians staffed blackjack and Texas hold’em tables as well as Under and Over 7 and Crown and Anchor wheels from about 9 pm until midnight. Each student was given $3,000 of “funny money” and invited to the warm room to play.
At the end of the night, the three highest money earners were able to turn their “funny money” into real cash, so the room was full for most of the night with lots of hooting and hollering as several students beat the Rotary “house.”
New Rotarian Dawn Schultz organized Rotarians for the event and was a dealer as well as a money counter prior to midnight when students headed to Evergreen Theatre for a hypnotist’s performance.
