qathet Regional District (qRD) directors have recommended a 2.8 per cent increase to directors’ remuneration.
At the December 4 finance committee meeting, directors considered a motion to recommend an amendment to the directors’ remuneration and expense bylaw, to be passed at the December 18 regional board meeting.
Electoral Area D director Sandy McCormick asked if qRD remuneration was comparable to other regional districts of the same size.
Manager of financial services Linda Greenan said the last review was completed in 2019, and at that time, remuneration was comparable to similar-sized regional districts.
“We don’t know what has happened since then,” said Greenan. “Staff haven’t done any comparisons.”
Electoral Area E director and committee chair Andrew Fall said the increase was modest, so he was fully in support of the motion.
The committee voted unanimously for the increase, which will be up for adoption at the next regional board meeting.
Directors then considered recommending to the board that $15,000 be included in the 2025 budget for a comprehensive review of the directors’ remuneration package.
Electoral Area B director Mark Gisborne made the motion for the comprehensive remuneration review. City of Powell River director Cindy Elliott said a comprehensive review and a report every once in a while had value.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing data gathered,” said Elliott. “People coming in to run for office would have more information.”
Electoral Area A director Jason Lennox said he was torn about spending an estimated $15,000 for a review.
City director Rob Southcott asked about just conducting a review of items such as travel per diem and mileage. Greenan said this could be conducted by staff and an outside consultant would not be required.
Gisborne withdrew his motion for the $15,000 comprehensive review.
The committee then passed a recommendation that the regional board have staff review the travel per diem and mileage components of the directors’ remuneration.
