Rescue by helicopter
A Royal Canadian Air Force Cormorant helicopter crew, with assistance from BC Ambulance Service paramedics from Powell River, hoisted two people from Nelson Island, early Saturday morning, July 20.
Two women had fallen from a deck balcony, and because of limited road access to the area and difficult beach terrain, paramedics called Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria to request assistance with the evacuation.
The Cormorant crew from 442 Squadron was on scene at approximately 12:45 am.
“We had tall trees on the right and a steep drop off to the ocean on the left,” explained Captain Pete Wright, first officer. “So we all worked together.”
The SAR Techs were lowered 80 feet where they met up with the paramedics who had arrived on scene on board the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Cape Caution.
Both casualties were placed on spine boards before putting them in rescue litters for the hoist into the hovering helicopter. The helicopter landed at 19 Wing Comox at approximately 2:30 am and transferred both patients in stable condition to an awaiting ambulance for transport to hospital. Their present condition is unknown.
Library funds
Powell River Public Library board of trustees has received its fundraising feasibility report from Pharos Fundraising Communication + Strategy. The report was commissioned in March to explore whether the board could raise sufficient funds to build the new library. The report findings will be discussed with City of Powell River and Powell River Regional District officials before being released to the public.
