School district seeks ideas

About 50 concerned parents attended a community discussion on the future enrolment and facility management of Eco French Immersion at James Thomson Elementary, recently.

Jay Yule, School District 47 superintendent of schools, Steve Hopkins, secretary treasurer, and Jasmin Marshman, James Thomson principal, spoke with the parents of current and prospective students Tuesday, January 27.

The meeting was organized after fewer spaces than previous years were opened up for kindergarten enrolment in the popular program.

The district administrators explained how if enrolment was not reduced this year it would mean that in two years from now there would not be an available space at the elementary school, which is almost at capacity.

Parents brought several ideas to the discussion including creating an outside classroom, utilizing the Outdoor Learning Centre on Powell Lake, and juggling schedules for classroom sharing.

Yule reiterated the position that Powell River Board of Education stands behind the program and wants to see it succeed. Ideas sent by email to [email protected] will be relayed to administrators.

Setting it straight

In last week’s Rotary Awareness section of this newspaper, Catfish Creative’s Ernie Burden’s name was spelled incorrectly. The Peak regrets the error.

Also an email was incorrect for Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival. It is [email protected].
