City of Powell River council meeting on Thursday, April 18, will start at 6 pm. The early start time is to allow a presentation about the proposed 2013-2017 financial plan.

Documents prepared for the presentation are available at city hall. They show that the residential tax class will contribute 64.55 per cent, or just over $9 million, of total property taxation in 2013. The major industry tax class will contribute 16 per cent, or $2.25 million, while the business class provides 18 per cent, or $2.552 million.

Taxation is 54 per cent of the city’s revenue, or just over $14.6 million. Total revenue is estimated to be $27.1 million.


Clinic opens

A clinic has opened to help the growing number of people who are without a family doctor.

Nurse practitioner Carol Smith will see patients in her clinic at Powell River General Hospital once a week. The clinic runs Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 6 pm.

Smith has been caring for patients at Evergreen Extended Care Unit since 2008 and continues her work there.

Patients need to book an appointment to see Smith and can do so by calling 604.485.3211 between 7 and 9 pm on Mondays.


Sailing cancellations

In preparation for terminal upgrades at Westview in January 2014, BC Ferries will be performing dock tests at Saltery Bay with the North Island Princess on Sunday, April 21. The first three round-trip sailings between Powell River and Texada Island on that day will be cancelled.
