qathet residents take advantage of rare snow day

The qathet region was blanketed in snow on Wednesday, January 17, with snow continuing to fall until noon today.

Environment and Climate Change Canada stated in a snowfall warning this morning that 15 to 25 centimeters of snow fell on the Northern Sunshine Coast overnight and into the afternoon. The snow stopped falling as of noon today, and rain/sleet is in the forecast for tonight in the region.

Most major roads have been cleared and Powell River Regional Transit System indicated in an update that buses operating conventional service are back in operation after cancelling service earlier today. Rural service remains suspended as of 2:20 pm.

qathet School District closed schools today, as did many businesses; although most businesses were open on Marine Avenue despite the snow.

The Peak has a snow day photo contest that runs until 8 pm tonight, January 17. Entrants are asked to take a photo of what they create and email the original, high resolution version to [email protected]. The contest is open to all ages.

Posing with the creation is recommended. The winning entry will receive four tickets/passes to a movie at Patricia Theatre or an upcoming Powell River Kings regular season hockey game (winner's choice!) and have their photo published. Select runner-up photos may also be published.

Weatherhood can also provide qathet residents with more localized weather information.
