Approves construction
Construction by the Rotary Club of Powell River of a covered shelter at the Van Anda ball field was approved at the January 25 qathet Regional District (qRD) board meeting. According to a staff report, Rotary reached out to the regional district to donate an open-air gazebo style structure at the field. The club will donate all materials, labour and equipment for the project, valued at $24,000.
Funding allocated
The regional board has voted to allocate $169,000 of community works funds in draft four of the regional district’s financial plan toward the Myrtle Pond water system loop reconnection project if the grant application for funding is not successful.
Housing shortage
The regional board has directed staff to report back regarding solutions to mitigate the current housing shortage in rural areas, and that this review consider: best practices of other regional districts; which types of housing have been most successful; overarching legislation regarding affordable housing; and Vancouver Coastal Health regulations that may restrict multiple housing units from being developed on single lots.
qRD's the committee of the whole (COW) made the recommendation regarding a housing shortage solutions report at its meeting on January 11.
Report initiated
Suggestions regarding the laying of flowers inside the Powell River Regional Cemetery mausoleum made by Don Villani will be relayed to regional district staff, who will be directed to bring back a report on actions that the regional district might take. Villani made a presentation to regional directors at the January committee of the whole meeting, indicating that flowers he had laid in the mausoleum for his wife had been removed from in front of the crypt.
At the January 11 COW meeting, City of Powell River director George Doubt made a motion to refer Villani’s suggestions to staff for a report, which was carried.
