qathet Regional District's (qRD) board has voted to make a fair determination that the total number of electors for the alternate approval process for the Lund Community Centre be established at 1,063.
At a meeting on January 25, the board has also approved an elector response form and established a deadline for receiving the forms as March 6 at 4 pm.
The regional board is pledging to commit $1.6 million as its share of the project for affected Electoral Area A electors and that elector assent using the alternate approval process be initiated in order to borrow up to $1.1 million. A grant of $4,199,082 has been awarded by the Canada Infrastructure Program for the project.
The grant portion cannot exceed 73.33 per cent of eligible expenditures.
A report to the regional board indicates the alternate approval process will cost approximately $5,000 for public engagement, including mailouts. The alternate approval process involves electors who are opposed to the borrowing filling out a form and submitting it to the regional district.
If at least 10 per cent (106) of eligible voters sign and submit an elector response form by the deadline, the regional district board may not proceed with adopting the Lund Community Centre loan authorization bylaw unless elector approval is obtained by referendum.
At the regional district’s January 11 finance committee meeting, directors considered a recommendation for the alternate approval process.
