ARTIST OPENING: Artist Karen Skadsheim talks about her art piece at the 2023 group art show titled, Present, at qathet Art Centre.

qathet Art Centre (qAC) is once again launching a group art exhibition and fundraiser, titled Present, in December at the qAC gallery above Powell River Public Library.

The 2023 show saw more than 90 original art pieces exclusively from qathet region creators on the gallery walls. The timing of the show is purposeful as a way for local artists to make some extra cash for the holidays and a way for patrons to purchase original works.

The art work will be on display and for sale until February 20, 2025. The theme, Present, has many meanings, according to qAC’s description of the exhibition: to be in attendance, to give or bestow, to offer or view, to exist or occur now.

"This show is our annual opportunity for all members of the qathet art community to share and to have their work for sale, in time for holiday celebrations," qAC members and council state on the qAC website. "Artists will receive 70 per cent of profits from their art sale, the remaining 30 per cent going to the qathet Art Council. All contributions to this annual fundraiser go to the ongoing work of the qathet Art Council and qathet Art Centre in supporting arts and culture in the region."

Last year's show exhibited well-known artists from the region such as Luke Ramsey and Theo Angell, but also many first time exhibitors.

Last year the Peak reported that, according to the Canada Revenue Agency, the cost of acquiring original artwork for a business can be treated as a deductible expense for income tax purposes, and the purchase price of the artwork can be deducted from the business’s taxable income, reducing overall tax liability. There are a few simple stipulations, one being that the work must be from a Canadian artist.

PRESENT, at qathet Art Centre, located at 215-6975 Alberni Street, has an opening reception on Friday, December 6, from 6 to 9 pm.

The exhibit will be available for viewing until February 20, 2025. For information about qAC, go to qathetart.ca/present-2024.
