Winter markets aim to support small business in qathet

Buying gifts from local vendors can make holiday shopping more enjoyable

A couple events are being planned to get folks into the spirit of the holiday season while supporting the plethora of local artists and small business owners in the qathet region.

Florist Nicole Quigley, who owns Bloom Therapy, is organizing two events: Jingle Shop Hop, hosted by Coastal Women in Business (CWiB), and the annual Winter Market at Springtime Garden Centre.

"Jingle Shop Hop is a late-night shopping event aimed at supporting small local businesses on Friday, November 29," explained Quigley. "All participating businesses will be open until at least 7 pm and are offering a perk for popping into their store."

Members of CWiB said that after last year's success, the Jingle Shop Hop is back for its second year.

“We’re excited to bring together a curated selection of local stores, artisans and makers, offering unique handmade gifts, sustainable products and holiday treats from 4 to 7 pm,” said CWiB event coordinator Milla Hope. “Each store has something to offer for this special event, whether it's a nibble and a drink or a discount on this self-guided tour."

Quigley said the tour includes a late-night shopping passport to earn a free beverage courtesy of CWiB, which is redeemable at Townsite Brewing starting at 7 pm on November 29.

"Take the shopping passport to each participating retailer, have them sign off on it, and we'll give you a drink, no purchases necessary," added Quigley.

She encourages people to make sure to mark themselves as attending the community event by following CWiB social media posts or websites to see which retailers are participating this year.

"Some brick and mortar stores will even have other small businesses [home-based] popping up in their space," said Quigley.

The second event Quigley is organizing is the Winter Market at Springtime Garden Centre, located at 5300 Yukon Avenue, on Saturday, December 7, and Sunday, December 8, from 11 to 3 pm.

"It's a curated market held around the garden centre and under the cover of the greenhouses featuring over 40 of the best local makers and businesses, on-the-spot photo sessions, coffee truck, food and treats, covered dining area, adult libations, River City pop-up café, and a free childrens' creation station," said Quigley.
