In spring and summer months on most Sundays, folks in qathet can usually spot colourful spinnakers on sailboats in the waters off Willingdon Beach. Most likely, a majority come from Powell River Yacht Club.
Now, in the quieter months and heading into winter, the club is planning its annual Harbour Lights Festival on December 14, from 5 to 7 pm, in Westview's south harbour.
The Peak reached out to the yacht club to find out more about this year's festivities.
"Everyone is welcome to enjoy the decorated boats, snacks and hot chocolate," said Yacht club member Blake Hoffert. "Prizes can be won for the best decorated boat by popular vote, and in the photo contest for the best photo of the festival."
The club has about 40 members year-round.
Hoffert said that all boaters, including powerboat owners, are welcome to join the event with free moorage and power starting Friday, December 13, and continuing to Monday, December 16.
"The public are welcome anytime, but viewing for the contest is best from 5 pm to 7 pm Saturday, at the south part of south harbour," suggested Hoffert. "They [the public] can view the boats lit up as they walk on the dock close up."
There will be a vote table set up for people to pick their favourite boat and prizes from Jessie McDonald, Marine Traders, Jack's Boat Yard and City of Powell River.
The Salvation Army will be at the harbour with food and hot chocolate and the Coast Guard will have its boat available for public touring, according to Hoffert.
