POSITIVE PLAY: Powell River Villa player Niko Cristante puts a move on a Gorge FC opponent at Timberlane Park, in an exciting match that wound up in a 2-2 tie.

Powell River Villa continued its positive play, with an exciting 2-2 tie at Timberlane Park, October 7, versus first-place Gorge FC.

In Vancouver Island Soccer League action, Gorge would kick off the scoring, when at the seven minute mark, a Gorge forward was able to slip through the Villa defence, pushing the ball past Villa keeper Scott McKenzie, putting the away side up 1-0. Villa would create a number of scoring chances early and at the 28-minute mark, an over-the-top ball to the right corner from Niko Cristante found winger Jacob Duyvesteyn, whose centering pass was put towards net by striker Jared Timothy, deflecting off a Gorge defender, to even the score at 1-1.

Early in the second half, Gorge again took the lead at the 49-minute mark as a Gorge cross found the team’s striker on the left side, who evaded defenders, calmly putting the ball in the right side of the Villa goal.

Villa would come back once again when, at the 75th minute, Jared Timothy was fouled on the top of Gorge’s 18-yard box, setting up a free kick from 25 yards out. Niko Cristante would step up, putting a bending shot into the top right corner, tying the game 2-2.

Minutes later, Villa would almost take the lead when Cristante fired another strike, this one just going over the bar. Gorge applied pressure late in the game with a shot glancing the post, but neither team could do enough to take the win, and would have to settle for a point each.

Villa next plays on the road when they travel to Victoria for a game October 14 versus Westcastle International Academy at 8 pm at Finlayson turf field in Victoria.
