Powell River RCMP received a call on August 17 from a person who advised they had received a call from someone who stated they were a lawyer. The lawyer explained that the person’s son was in jail and he needed $3,000 for lawyers fees.

Police say the "so-called lawyer" also stated that there was a publication ban in place so the matter couldn’t be discussed with anyone. The money was e-transferred before it was realized this was a scam.

Police are reminding everyone that these types of calls are a scam. Anyone who receives a call about a family member in need should hang up and call the person directly. Unfortunately, once the money has changed hands, it is almost impossible to get it back.

Anyone with information about any crime is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477) or online at bccrimestoppers.com.
