This year’s holiday CounterAttack campaign targeting impaired driving will begin this weekend. Powell River RCMP, the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) are working together to urge drivers to be responsible during the holiday season and to plan for a safe ride home.
According to a media release from Powell River RCMP, if people drink, they should not drive and plan ahead to get home safely by assigning a designated driver, or calling a taxi if holiday festivities involve alcohol or drugs. Powell River Taxi operates until 11 pm on weekdays and until midnight on the weekends, the release stated.
“The campaign will kick off on December 3, which is National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day,” stated Powell River RCMP constable Paula Perry. “Powell River RCMP will be conducting road checks and will be looking for impaired drivers and removing them from our roadways.
“Police will be recognizing designated drivers with 7-Eleven Slurpee vouchers donated by ICBC, and tickets donated by the Powell River Kings hockey organization.”
Powell River RCMP and MADD will also be at the Kings hockey game on December 3 to promote the start of the CounterAttack and Project Red Ribbon campaigns. Project Red Ribbon is MADD’s annual awareness campaign to promote sober driving during the holiday season.
MADD Canada’s red ribbon is a symbol of the wearer’s commitment to never drive impaired.
