Students are back in school next week, which means all school zones will be in effect for vehicles starting on Tuesday, September 3.

School zones are in effect Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and playground zones continue to be in effect seven days a week from dawn until dusk.

Powell River RCMP would like to remind all drivers and bike riders of the following: speed limit in a school zone is 30-kilometres per hour; vehicles and bikes must come to a complete stop at stop signs and at occupied crosswalks; vehicles and bikes must stop when the lights on a school bus are flashing yellow or red and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing and the bus starts to move.

Police encourage everyone to take extra precautions when driving in any area where children may be crossing the road.

Powell River RCMP responded to 133 total calls for service from August 21 to 27, including six thefts, two break and enter, one impaired driving incident, three assaults, 14 cases of mischief and eight related to mental health.

Anyone with information about a crime is asked to contact Powell River RCMP at 604.485.6255, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 or bccrimestoppers.com.
