Powell River Fire Rescue (PRFR) has reported an incident that occurred on July 13 involving a natural gas line break on Chilcotin Avenue.
At approximately 1:44 pm, PRFR promptly responded to a 911 call reporting the incident.
“Our team worked in close collaboration with FortisBC, the local gas utility company, and successfully resolved the situation within one hour,” stated deputy chief Rocky Swanson in a written statement. “The immediate and coordinated response by PRFR and the expertise of FortisBC ensured the safety of the community and effectively mitigated risks associated with the gas leak. FortisBC utilized heavy equipment, in conjunction with PRFR’s efforts, to address the emergency efficiently.”
Swanson stated that the fire department is pleased to report there were no injuries or significant property damage beyond the gas line itself.
“The diligent actions of PRFR and FortisBC ensured the safety of residents and protected nearby structures,” stated Swanson. “We express our gratitude for the swift and professional response demonstrated by our firefighters and FortisBC personnel, which led to a quick and safe resolution of the incident.”
Swanson stated that residents and local businesses were able to resume their normal activities, as the immediate threat has been eliminated.
“PRFR and FortisBC will continue to monitor the situation to ensure ongoing safety and address any remaining concerns,” stated Swanson. “We would like to extend our appreciation to the community for their cooperation during this incident and recognize the collaborative efforts of all emergency responders and FortisBC. Their commitment and professionalism contributed to the successful resolution of the emergency.”
