At approximately 5:50 am on July 12, Powell River Fire Rescue (PRFR) responded swiftly to a 911 call reporting a structure fire at Woodward Place in Westview.

According to PRFR deputy chief Rocky Swanson, the single-storey house, occupied by one adult, was the primary focus of the department’s firefighting efforts.

“PRFR units were on the scene within five minutes,” stated Swanson in a written release. “Our dedicated fire crews worked diligently and efficiently, successfully bringing the fire under control in a remarkably short period of time. The damage caused by the fire was confined to one room; however, smoke damage is evident throughout the structure.”

Swanson stated that the occupant of the house managed to exit the premises unharmed before the fire department’s arrival, ensuring the swift and safe evacuation of the residence.

“We are relieved to report that there were no injuries as a result of this incident. The seamless collaboration between emergency service providers allowed for comprehensive assistance during the emergency,” stated Swanson. “We had assistance during the emergency, with emergency health services, BC Hydro and emergency social services offering invaluable support.”

Swanson stated at this time, the fire remains under investigation.

“PRFR is working closely with relevant authorities to determine the cause and origin of the fire, ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future,” stated Swanson. “I want to express my gratitude for the swift response and exceptional teamwork displayed by PRFR personnel. I also extend appreciation to the community for its cooperation and understanding during the emergency. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness.”

Swanson stated that PRFR wants to remind residents to regularly test smoke alarms, develop and practice home escape plans, and ensure all potential fire hazards are properly maintained.

“By taking these precautionary measures, we can collectively work toward reducing the risk of fire incidents and protecting our community,” stated Swanson.
