Powell River Farmers' Market included in new app launch

BC Farmers' Market Trail helps folks find markets while travelling

This year the  Powell River Farmers' Market turns 37, just in time for the BC Farmers’ Market Association launch of a new mobile app called the Tasting Passport. Many farmers' markets in BC are already included on the BC Farmers’ Market Trail website, which can be used to find 145 markets around BC.

Membership and programs manager with BC Association of Farmers' Markets Melissa Maltais said the new digital mobile app is a way to discover and share popular activities happening around featured markets across BC.

"It's a great way to support local food producers while travelling," said Maltais.

Manager of Powell River Farmers' Market Juhli Jobi said that the market recently acquired new signs on Highway 101 near Maris Road.

"Rolling into the summer we have 16 local farmers that have  already sold amazing bedding plants and provide steady quantities of fresh vegetables, berries, microgreens, honey, eggs, locally raised meat and other value-added products," said Jobi. "If you're looking to buy directly from farmers or visit a farm, check out www.prfarmers.ca/#local-food-map for an online interactive listing of local farmers."

Jobi said that for over a decade the market has been supporting the BC Farmers' Markets Nutrition Coupon Program initiative.

"This provides low income families, seniors and new moms with Nutrition Coupons that can be used at the market to purchase unprocessed, nutrient dense foods that include veggie starts, fruit and vegetables, eggs, nuts, meat and honey," said Jobi. "If you head over to your app store and type in BC Farmers' Market Trail, the app lets you check in at various locations and earn points, rewards and prizes, some that you can collect right at the market."

Powell River Farmers' Market operates every Saturday from from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, May through September, and on Sundays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm year-round at 4365 McLeod Road.
