City of Powell River councillors voted against sending a $5,000 contribution to qathet Regional District’s rural on-demand transit study.

City of Powell River Council has voted to decline a request from qathet Regional District to contribute $5,000 in funding to support a desktop study for an on-demand shuttle system in the rural region, given existing studies, funding and efforts to date relating to on-demand transit.

At the September 1 city council meeting, councillor George Doubt said the regional district has received grant money and authorized funding from regional district resources to complete this study of on-demand transit within the regional district.

“We’ll be able to use the information from that,” said Doubt, “when we look further into transit for the city.”

At the August 16 committee of the whole meeting, councillors reviewed a report from city chief administrative officer Russell Brewer, which recommended that council decline the request.
