ELECTRICAL COMPONENT: Powell River Airport’s lighting project is now operational, providing for airport service around the clock, seven days a week.

Upland Contracting has successfully completed the electrical component of the Powell River Airport (YPW) runway rehabilitation project in accordance with Transport Canada and NAV CANADA requirements.

According to a media release from City of Powell River, the airfield lighting system, which had exceeded its life expectancy, has been replaced with modern LED technology.

The completion of this milestone means the airport is now fully operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for all types of aircraft, including passenger carriers, private aircraft, helicopters and emergency medical flights (medevac). The ability to provide fixed-wing medevac aircraft to land and take off at night is critical for transporting patients to the Lower Mainland for emergency care, the release stated.

The YPW runway rehabilitation project was made possible through an $8-million federal grant from the Airport Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).
