Powell River RCMP responded to 73 total calls for service from February 5 to 12, including two thefts, two for impaired driving, four assaults, six cases of mischief and seven related to mental health.

February 5
Police received a report of a Facebook Marketplace scam. A community member had posted books for sale on the site. Someone requested to purchase the books and sent an e-transfer for the amount. When the community member clicked to accept the funds, the link asked for further banking information. Fortunately, they were able to recognize it as a scam, and reported the information to their bank. As a result, they did not lose any money.

RCMP is reminding everyone to be vigilant when buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace and not to provide banking information through email.

February 10
At approximately 3 pm, police were conducting patrols on Highway 101 near Homalco Road, north of Powell River, when a vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. Police stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, a 61-year-old female from the Powell River area.

While speaking to the driver, police detected an odour of liquor on her breath. A breath sample was taken with an approved screening device, which registered a warning. As a result, the driver was issued a three-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was towed.
