According to a policy recommendation paper in October 2024, by the think-tank Equiterre: Public transit is at the nexus of solving Canada’s most pressing challenges, such as traffic congestion, the rising cost of living and reducing carbon emissions.
However, due to antiquated funding models for transit, many mid-size cities and rural populations have less access to convenient public transit.
BC Transit, in partnership with City of Powell River and qathet Regional District, is developing a strategic plan for the future of the Powell River Regional Transit System.
According to BC Transit, the plan will identify transit service improvements and infrastructure improvements over the next one to seven years, and will be considering designing entirely new bus routes.
BC Transit is looking for public participation at two key stages in the project:
Phase one, an online and paper survey will be available from December 3 to December 20, 2024. Phase two, public engagement events will take place in spring 2025.
"Even if you do not use transit today, we want to hear from you," stated BC Transit on its website. "The survey below will help our planners understand the needs and priorities of current riders as well as the community."
Paper surveys are available at the following locations: On board any BC Transit Bus in the Powell River Regional Transit System, Powell River Recreation Complex, Powell River Public Library and Powell River Town Centre (near the administration office).
