North Island-Powell River MP calls out clawbacks to GIS

On Monday, September 16, North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney called out the Liberals for clawing back the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) for vulnerable seniors.

After raising the Canada Pension Plan last year, the Liberals have clawed back GIS, costing seniors hundreds of dollars a year that they could be used to help cover their bills, groceries and medications, Blaney stated in the House of Commons.

Blaney stated that this is reminiscent of the Conservatives, who, when they had power, cut pensions, increased the retirement age from 65 to 67 and have said that if they were to be in government again, they would cut pensions again.

“The poorest seniors are receiving hundreds of dollars less every year because Liberal policies created another GIS clawback," stated Blaney. "This summer, I heard from seniors and their loved ones. They are drowning.

"Conservatives cut pensions and increased the retirement age, and Liberals are punishing the poorest seniors and rewarding those with the most.”
